Cognitive behavioral therapy, usually called CBT, is a structured, skills-based form of talk therapy. It helps you notice the thoughts and habits that keep anxiety, low mood or stress going, and then practice new ways of responding. At Integrative Psychiatry & Wellness (IPW Health), our licensed therapists and supervised associate clinicians use CBT with adults from our Mission Viejo practice and by secure video across California.
CBT is practical: sessions have a clear focus, and you leave with something to try before the next visit.

CBT may be a good fit if you are an adult who:
If focus and follow-through are your main concern, an adult ADHD evaluation can help sort out whether attention problems are related to ADHD, anxiety, mood or sleep before you choose a therapy plan.
CBT is built on a simple idea: thoughts, feelings and actions affect each other. When you are anxious or down, the mind tends to predict the worst, and you may start avoiding things, which keeps the cycle going. CBT gives you ways to step out of that loop.
Our therapists may combine CBT with related approaches, such as acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), DBT-informed skills or mindfulness, when that suits your goals. For OCD, our therapists use exposure and response prevention (ERP), a specialized form of CBT. If trauma is part of the picture, they can also talk with you about trauma-focused therapy and EMDR. Some people do well with therapy alone. Others also want a psychiatric evaluation, and medication management is available here when clinically appropriate. With your consent, your therapist and psychiatric provider can coordinate so both sides of your care work together.
Your first CBT session typically lasts 45–60 minutes. There is no test to pass. Your therapist will ask:
By the end, you will have a first set of goals and a sense of how often to meet. Many people start weekly and space out sessions as skills take hold.
Individual CBT sessions are held by secure, HIPAA-compliant video for adults located in California at the time of each session, so you can meet from home or a private space at work. Our office at 27201 Puerta Real, Suite 300, Mission Viejo, CA 92691 offers in-person psychiatric visits, and couples therapy is available in person or by telehealth. Clients join us from Rancho Santa Margarita, Lake Forest, Laguna Niguel and Ladera Ranch.
We are in network for both therapy and psychiatry with Aetna, Anthem, Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS), Cigna, Medicare, Optum and UnitedHealthcare (UHC). Participation can differ by state and by plan, so our team verifies your benefits before your first visit. Prefer to pay directly? Self-pay is available: a standard psychiatric evaluation is $350 and a follow-up visit is $200. Current therapy session rates are listed on our plans and pricing page.
We keep time open for new patients every week, so same-week new-patient appointments are usually available, and same-day visits are sometimes possible when openings allow. Office hours are Monday to Friday, 9 a.m.–5 p.m., and Saturday, 10 a.m.–2 p.m. Book online or call us, and tell us you are interested in CBT so we can match you with a therapist who uses it.
It depends on your goals. Some people work through a focused concern in about 8 to 12 sessions, while others choose longer support. Your therapist will review progress with you regularly.
