Crisis Text Line, if talking on the phone feels like too much.

IPW Health is not a 24/7 crisis service. Our phone line and patient portal are answered during business hours only. If you need help outside those hours, or sooner than we can respond, please use the numbers above — that is what they are there for, and no concern is too small.

What actually happens when you call 988

People often hesitate because they do not know what to expect. Here is the honest version.

A trained crisis counselor answers. You can call, text, or chat. You do not need to be in danger, and you do not need to have a plan or a diagnosis — people call about panic, grief, substance use, loneliness, relationship crises, or simply not coping. You can stay anonymous.

The counselor listens first, then helps you work out what would help next. Most calls are resolved on the phone. Emergency services are involved only in the small number of situations where there is imminent risk to someone’s life.

You can also call 988 about someone else — to ask how to help, or what to say.

How to help someone you are worried about

Ask directly. Plain words are better than careful ones. Asking someone whether they are thinking about suicide does not plant the idea — it usually comes as a relief that someone noticed.

Listen before you fix. You do not need the right answer. Staying calm and not arguing with how they feel matters more than anything you say.

Do not leave someone alone if you believe they are in immediate danger. Call 911.

Offer to be there while they call. Making the call is often the hardest part; sitting with someone while they do it is a real thing you can give.

Call 988 yourself. Counselors will talk you through how to support someone, including practical steps to make a home safer. You do not have to work it out alone.

If you are an IPW Health patient

For non-urgent questions — prescription refills, scheduling, billing, or something you want to raise before your next visit — message us through your patient portal or call (949) 259-5123. These are answered during business hours.

If something changes and you are not safe waiting, use 988 or 911. Tell us afterwards so we can adjust your care. Reaching out in a crisis is never something you will be judged for here.
