Why psychiatric care in your own language matters

A psychiatric evaluation depends on describing your experience precisely: how you sleep, what worry feels like in your body, how your mood shifts over a week, what your family history looks like. Many people who grew up speaking Farsi find that some of those things are easier to say, or only make sense, in Farsi. Others are comfortable in English but want a provider who understands the family expectations, migration stories and cultural attitudes toward mental health that shape what they’re going through.

With Shery you can use whichever language feels natural, and switch between Farsi and English in the same visit.

Meet your provider: Shahrzad (Shery) Shadmani, PMHNP-BC, FNP-C

Shery is the founder of IPW Health. She’s dual board-certified as a psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner and a family nurse practitioner, and licensed in California, Oregon, Washington and Colorado. She speaks English and Farsi. Her approach is integrative: alongside your mental health history, she looks at sleep, stress, hormones, nutrition and physical health, because they often affect each other. What Farsi-speaking psychiatric care includes

Psychiatric evaluation

Your first visit is a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation. Shery reviews your current concerns, history, health, sleep, relationships and goals, then talks with you about what she thinks is going on and lays out a care plan you can understand and agree to. You can ask questions in Farsi and get answers in Farsi.

Ongoing follow-up care

After the evaluation, follow-up visits track how you’re doing, adjust the plan as your life changes, and coordinate with other parts of your care. If you also want therapy, our therapy team can work alongside your psychiatric care, and with your consent your therapist and Shery can coordinate.

Concerns we commonly help with

  • Anxiety, panic and constant worry
  • Depression, low mood and burnout
  • ADHD evaluation and adult ADHD care
  • OCD and intrusive thoughts
  • Stress connected to immigration, family pressure or caring for parents
  • Mood changes around pregnancy, postpartum, perimenopause and menopause
  • Sleep problems and trouble focusing

Telehealth across four states, and in person on Mondays

Most visits are by secure video, so you can be seen from home anywhere in the states where Shery is licensed:

If you’d rather meet face to face, in-person psychiatric visits are on Mondays at 27201 Puerta Real, Suite 300, Mission Viejo, CA 92691. That’s convenient for patients across Orange County, including Irvine, Laguna Niguel, Lake Forest and Aliso Viejo. Not sure which to choose? See in-person vs. telehealth.

Care for teens and families

We see teens 12 and older. Many Iranian-American families have a parent who’s more comfortable in Farsi and a teen who’s more comfortable in English, and Shery can work in both languages so everyone understands the plan. Learn more about teen mental health care.
