Maybe you’ve always been the person who loses their keys, starts five projects and finishes one, or needs a deadline breathing down your neck before you can focus. Maybe you’ve wondered for years whether it’s “just you” or something more. If that sounds familiar, an adult ADHD evaluation can give you clearer answers and a path forward.
At IPW Health, we offer ADHD evaluations for adults by telehealth and, on Mondays, in person at our Mission Viejo office. This guide walks through what an evaluation involves, signs that it may be worth getting assessed, your visit options, and how to get started.
Why Adults Seek an ADHD Evaluation
Many adults were never evaluated as children. Some did well enough in school that no one noticed they were struggling. Others were labeled “distracted,” “lazy,” or “a daydreamer” instead of being assessed. As life gets more demanding with work, relationships, parenting, and managing a household, patterns that were once manageable can start to feel overwhelming.
An evaluation isn’t about putting a label on you. It’s about understanding how your mind works so you can make informed decisions about your care. Sometimes the answer is ADHD. Sometimes it’s something else, like anxiety, depression, sleep problems, or stress, that looks similar. Either way, a careful assessment helps you and your provider understand what’s really going on.
Signs It May Be Worth Getting Evaluated
Everyone gets distracted or forgetful sometimes. What matters is whether these patterns are long-standing, show up in more than one area of your life, and get in the way of things you care about. Common experiences adults describe include:
- Trouble staying focused on tasks that aren’t interesting, even important ones
- Frequently losing or misplacing everyday items like keys, wallets, or phones
- Starting projects with enthusiasm but struggling to finish them
- Chronic lateness or difficulty estimating how long things will take
- Procrastinating until the last minute, then working in bursts
- Feeling restless, fidgety, or “always on,” even when you want to relax
- Interrupting others or speaking before thinking
- Difficulty keeping up with emails, bills, appointments, or paperwork
- Feeling like you’re working much harder than others to keep up
If several of these sound like you, and they’ve been part of your life for a long time, it may be worth talking with a professional. You don’t need to be sure it’s ADHD before reaching out. That’s what the evaluation is for.
What an Adult ADHD Evaluation Involves
An adult ADHD evaluation is a thoughtful conversation and assessment, not a quick quiz. While every person’s visit is a little different, an evaluation generally includes:
- A detailed conversation about your concerns. Your provider will ask what’s bringing you in, how these challenges show up day to day, and how they affect work, school, relationships, and home life.
- Your history. ADHD typically begins in childhood, so you may be asked about school experiences, early behavior, and how things have changed over time. If you have old report cards or input from a family member, that can be helpful, but it isn’t required.
- Screening questionnaires. Standardized questionnaires help organize your experiences and compare them to common patterns.
- A look at the bigger picture. Your provider will also consider other things that can affect focus and energy, such as mood, anxiety, sleep, stress, and overall health.
- A discussion of next steps. At the end of the process, you’ll talk about what was found and what options make sense for you, which may include therapy, follow-up visits, or other support.
Our evaluations are completed by our psychiatric nurse practitioners, who take time to listen and understand your full story. If you need documentation of your evaluation, you can ask about it during your visit.
Telehealth or In Person: Choosing What Works for You
We want getting evaluated to be as easy as possible, so you have two ways to be seen.
Telehealth evaluations
Telehealth psychiatric visits are available to adults in California, Oregon, Washington, and Colorado. You can meet with your provider by secure video from home, your office, or anywhere private. Many people find this especially helpful when ADHD makes it hard to plan around commutes and waiting rooms.
In-person Mondays in Mission Viejo
If you’d rather sit down face to face, in-person psychiatric visits are available on Mondays at our office at 27201 Puerta Real, Suite 300, Mission Viejo, CA 92691. You can learn more about our in-person mental health visits in Mission Viejo.
Both options involve the same careful approach. The best choice is the one that makes it easiest for you to show up.
Insurance and Cash-Pay Options
IPW Health is in-network with Aetna, Anthem, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, Medicare, Optum, and UnitedHealthcare. Coverage depends on your specific plan, so we recommend checking your benefits or asking our team when you call.
If you prefer to pay directly, or your plan isn’t one we accept, cash-pay options are available:
- Psychiatric evaluation: $350
- Psychiatric follow-up visit: $200
- Therapy sessions: $140 to $250

Frequently Asked Questions
Can adults really have ADHD if they weren’t diagnosed as kids?
Yes. Many adults are evaluated for the first time later in life. ADHD typically begins in childhood, but it often goes unnoticed, especially in people who found ways to cope or whose challenges looked different from the stereotype.
Do I need a referral to get evaluated?
Requirements vary by insurance plan. Our team can help you understand what your plan may need when you call. Cash-pay patients can book directly.
Is a telehealth ADHD evaluation as thorough as an in-person one?
Telehealth and in-person evaluations follow the same careful process. Many people find telehealth more convenient, while others prefer meeting face to face. Choose what feels most comfortable for you.
What if it turns out I don’t have ADHD?
That’s still useful information. Focus and attention challenges can come from many sources, and your provider will talk with you about what they found and what support options may help.
What should I bring to my evaluation?
Bring a list of your main concerns, any past mental health records you have, and your insurance information. Old school records or notes from a family member can be helpful but aren’t required.
